Adv. Tap Teacher
I am a Jefferson City native who first started her
dance training at the Don Awe School of Dance.
I studied other dance forms, but tap has always
been my passion. After I graduated from high
school, I attended Stephens College as a dance
major studying primarily ballet and modern.
"Life" brought me back to Jefferson City where I
went to work for the Missouri Department of
Revenue. I got married, had my daughter,
Melissa, and then later put myself back in
school. I graduated with honors from Columbia
College with a B.S. in Business Administration.
Years later I remarried and had my son, Richard.
After Richard was born, I began teaching here at
dance training at the Don Awe School of Dance.

Dancenter. Over the years I have taught all levels of tap along with the occasional
variety and jazz class. I have also worked extensively with the Encore Dance
Company. I have been fortunate that my dances have done well at competition, but
one in particular was an acapella tap dance I did several years ago called "Uptown
Noise" which not only won some top honors, but also got for me a special award for
'Precision'. I also put together a tribute to my childhood idol, Gene Kelly, that Encore
presented in several of the local elementary schools. That program allowed me to
not only choreograph several tap dances, but also a ballet, modern, and some jazz
too.
Over the years, I have attended the St. Louis Tap Festival and taken classes from
people like Robert Reed and Dianne Walker. I have also been involved in the
Jefferson City Cantorium and several Little Theater and Capital City Players
productions. In 2004, my daughter, Melissa Hoelscher, and I entered a tap dance in
the Teacher/Pro category of the Spotlight Dance Cup dance competition and came
away with not only gold, but also the High Score Overall Division Winner for that
competition.
The love of dance is something I share with my daughter, Melissa. My son, Richard,
on the other hand enjoys working with his hands and is into tools and construction.
Both of them are two of my greatest blessings in life. And then there is Aden. Aden
is my grandson and he is the 'apple of my eye'. Being called "Mimi" brings me more
happiness then I can say.
Although I won't be as involved as I have in the past, because of the new
directions my life is taking, I enjoy working with kids of all ages and am
looking forward to teaching the advance tap class for this year.
